Grouper Fishing are some of the most sought-after bottom fish in Florida. These large, powerful fish are known for their fight and are a favorite target for both recreational and commercial fishermen. They can be found on both coasts. With the Gulf Coast being particularly famous for its Gag and Red Grouper. And the Atlantic Coast for its Black and Nassau Grouper.
Best Seasons for Grouper Fishing
Grouper can be caught year-round in Florida. But, the best time to target them is usually during the cooler months, from November to April. This is when these fish move closer to shore, making them more accessible to anglers.
Grouper Fishing Techniques
Grouper fishing typically involves bottom fishing with heavy tackle. Due to the size of these fish and their habit of seeking cover in reefs and structures when hooked. Live or cut bait such as squid, pinfish, or sardines is often used. Although jigs and deep-diving plugs can also be effective.
Groupers are known for their ability to change colors and patterns to blend in with their surroundings. They’re also known for their loud, rumbling sounds, which they make by vibrating their swim bladder. Grouper fishing just got a little more interesting.
Several species of Grouper have strict regulations in Florida, with closed seasons and size and bag limits, to protect their populations. Always check the current regulations before grouper fishing.
